LITURGICAL CHANGES After 30 years of the beginning of the Second Vatican Council, the Church has issued a new General Instruction that tries to fine tune the changes in the Liturgy brought about by the Council. We, at St. James, are trying to implement these changes slowly so that parishioners may not be overwhelmed by them. (That is the reason why many parishes are doing different things at this time. Every parish is taking a different pace in implementing them.) Although the changes are minor, nevertheless changes are changes. The fundamental principle of the Liturgy is that we are gathering together to worship the Father through Christ in the Holy Spirit as his Church. Gathering together means that we not only are united together in spirit but that we are physically gathered together. When people physically scatter all over the church, it is difficult to get a sense that we are gathering together to worship God as one body. We encourage, invite, and ask parishioners to consider sitting in the main section of the church so that we can see one another; hear one another; and help one another to worship God. The celebrant doesn’t see everyone who sits at the side pews Another expression of gathering together, the General Instruction explains, is for people to sing. Singing is not an appendage to the Liturgy. It is not optional. Everyone should participate in the singing. It is an important way that we as a community worship God together. Singing is a most important way of worshipping God. We at St. James have implemented the changes to the Liturgy of the Word. The times of silence after the proclamation of the Word has been lengthened so that we might absorb what was heard. The first and second reading are proclaimed form a book called the Lectionary. This book is placed on the bottom part of the stand as a sign of reverence. The Book of the Gospels is brought in procession at the beginning of Mass. It is brought in procession from the altar to the ambo (lecturn) for the proclamation of the Gospel. Parishioners have no doubt noticed that we enthrone the Book of the Gospels (opened) after the proclamation of the Gospel to show reverence to this Word of God. We ask that parishioners remain standing after the Gospel is proclaimed until the Book of the Gospels is enthroned in its place of honor. The General Instruction doesn’t seem to give one way of proceeding during the praying of the Our Father at Mass. People may hold hands or they may hold their hands in an extended manner or may pray in other ways. We will continue to explain the changes as we go along. It is hoped that we at St. James will continue to grow as a parish in our worship of God. |
