Blood Bank
Once again St. James Health Ministry, in conjunction
with St. John's Church, will be holding ow second Annual Blood Drive on
February 11,2001. The blood donated is available to any needy parishioner.
With many elderly people in our parish, this need provides an opportunity
for the younger members to contribute a lifesaving gift.
Who can donate blood?
Anyone 16 years or over who is
in good health. Anyone with a history of Cancer or anyone on Antibiotics
may not donate.
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure takes approximately 45 minutes from start
to finish. The procedure includes an interview to confirm elegibility, the
donation and the rest period after. At the interview, the technician will
ask you about any medications you are taking and any illnesses you may
have had.
Where and when will the Blood Drive be held?
The drive will be held in the basement of St. John's
Church from 8 AM until 12 Noon. Sign-up sheets may be found at the
entrances to the church.
Last year we had 9 donors. This year let
the community of St. James increase the amount of
a life-giving gift for all!
VOCATIONS: EVERYBODY'S BUSINESS is the title that the
Bishop used in his Pastoral Letter in the Jubilee Year. He presents that
there will be an continuing shortage of priests and an increasing number
of Catholics in this new century. Everyone is called to work to foster
vocations to the priesthood and religious life.
The Bishop mandated that all parishes have a vocations
team. The Education Committee has accepted the invitation to also serve as
the vocations committee. Julie Dumont, Janice Lord, Doreen Gonsalves, Elsa
Vicente, Margaret Mary Quinn, Kathy Massoud and Tom Oliver will sponsor
certain programs that will implement some of the suggestions that Barbara
Dunn of St. Thomas More Church in Somerset presented at a meeting last
month.
St. Lawrence Scouts are sponsoring a Spaghetti Supper on
Feb. 10, 2001 at 5:30 p.m. Tickets: $5 for adults and $3 for children.

LENT 2001
The St. Vincent de Paul Society of our parish sponsors
the collection of food during the season of Lent. Each week of Lent a
certain item of food is designated so that parishioners can bring that
food item to the church on the weekend. In this way a substantial amount
of certain food items can be acquired so that the food bags that are
distributed to the poor will have the same food items.
It is a wonderful way to include the poor in our Lenten
journey by remembering them when we do our weekly grocery shopping.
