LENT 2001: The Environment

The Liturgical Committee has been meeting to prepare for the season of Lent.

The church environment will take on a Lenten feeling. Plain purple hangings will be placed in the sanctuary and on the choir loft. Plain wreaths will be placed on the windows. A large cross will be placed in front of the church. A smaller cross will adorn the place in the gathering area where food will be collected for the poor.

As parishioners come to the church, they will be reminded that Lent is the season. On the main door of the church on County Street a purple hanging will be placed on the outside. A small container with a wooden cross will be placed on the stairs at the side entrance of the church.

The altar cloths will be purple along with the covering for the icon. The church will not have flowers. There will be a cloth covering the baptismal font, waiting for the Easter celebration of Baptism

LENTEN DEVOTIONS

The Liturgical Committee suggested that a list of weekday Lenten Masses and devotions in surrounding churches be included in the bulletin so that parishioners who cannot come to St. James because of schedules can take advantage of these services.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF CHILDREN IN LENT

Seven children will be baptized at the Easter Vigil this year. Meredith, Peter, Molly, Jason, Kayla, Tristen, and Alex are now preparing to receive this sacrament. Parishioners will be invited to pray for them during this coming Lenten season.

LENTEN MUSIC

The Liturgical Committee selected certain music for Lent. As we did last year, a list of Easter songs will be written in the bulletin for parishioners to select the ones that they would like to sing during that time.

Lent is the time that leads to Holy Week. On Good Friday no singing is done at the recessional. We will adopt that practice during the weekend Masses of Lent.

WHAT IS LENT?

The English language uses the German word for springtime to describe this forty day season. Lent is a part of a bigger celebration. These forty days lead to the most sacred week of the year Holy Week. The Sacred Triduum (which means three days in one) is Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. This one celebration, which takes three days to celebrate, most deeply celebrates the passion, death and resurrection of the Lord. Easter Sunday begins fifty days of the Easter Season ending with Pentecost.
