MEAT PIE SUPPER WILL BE HELD ON SATURDAY, MARCH 1, 2003 @ 5:30 P.M. IN THE CHURCH HALL. Tickets will be $6 per person.

LITURGICAL CHANGES

We ask that parishioners remain standing after the Gospel is proclaimed until the Book of the Gospels is enthroned in its place of honor.

As the Church issues a General Instruction to make changes in the celebration of the Liturgy, it emphasizes the importance of showing outward signs of our inward reverence for the Eucharist.

It is an important time to once again review the norms of receiving Communion that were presented thirty years ago after the Second Vatican Council.

A person wishing to receive Communion in the hand should lift up their hands so that the priest or Eucharistic Minister is aware of the parishioner’s desire.

The hand upon which the host is to be placed should be on top of the hand that will take the host to receive. When the person has received the host in the hand , they step to the side, receive the host. Then they return to their place. Receiving Communion and putting the host in one’s mouth while walking to one’s place is not acceptable.

We in union with the United States Conference of Bishops also invite parishioners to make a bow before receiving Communion. This is a small way of expressing reverence for the Eucharist.

LENTEN OFFERINGS

Ash Wednesday will be on March 5, 2003.

It has been the custom at St. James to make the Rice Bowl and Sacrificial Offering Folders available to parishioners to use during Lent.

We ask that parishioners return the rice bowls and the folders on Palm Sunday. They may place them in the first collection.

The following is the schedule of the weekends when these materials will be available.

Sat./ Sun. February 24/25 Sacrificial Folders

Sat./ Sun. March 1/2 Sacrificial Folders

LENTEN COLLECTION OF FOOD FOR THE POOR

ST. JAMES’ ST. VINCENT DE PAUL FOOD PANTRY

Our parish maintains a food pantry and delivers bags of food to our needy parishioners on a regular schedule.

We invite our parishioners to include their Lenten sacrificial giving in their weekly shopping. The St. Vincent de Paul Society suggests that parishioners donate certain food items each week during Lent. This will allow our needy families to have adequate bags of food delivered to them.

A list of these food items will be included in this bulletin:

Sunday, March 9

Spaghetti Sauce and canned vegetables

Sunday, March 16

canned meat (spam) and jam/jelly

Sunday, March 23

canned spaghetti and pasta (macaroni, shells, etc.)

Sunday, March 30

Sunday, April 6

ST. JAMES HEALTH MINISTRY

BLOOD BANK

The St. James Health Ministry will be sponsoring, in collaboration with St. John the Baptist Church, our annual blood drive on Sunday, March 2. Blood is one health care item not covered by health insurance, and one frequently needed during time of surgery or illness. Donation by any parishioner enables any member of the parish to draw on our blood bank in time of need.

A team from St. Luke’s Hospital will be available in St. John the Baptist Church Hall after all the Masses. The procedure takes about thirty minutes. As we take time to

Renew ourselves spiritually, please consider giving the gift of physical life to one in need.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Fr. Mick McCullough, Chaplain at St. Luke’s Hospital and a resident priest at St. James Rectory, is asking parishioners to consider helping his ministry at the hospital by doing secretarial work. If anyone is interested, please contact Fr. Mick.

THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION WILL BE CELEBRATED AT THE PARISH MASS ON SATURDAY, MARCH 8, 2003 AT 4 P.M. MONSIGNOR JOHN SMITH WILL BE THE CELEBRANT.
