Although the help is very good for the actual weekend, the help for setting up the booths and taking them down needs attention. We are in need of carpenters or people who have carpentry skills to set up the booths and take them down. The committee suggested that a request for help be put in the bulletin. We need to know by the next meeting (April 4) if there are any parishioners who have these skills and are willing to help. Please call the rectory before the next meeting. We need to make final decisions about the festival at the next meeting. ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT SUNDAY, APRIL 1 FROM NOON UNTIL 5 P.M. HOLY HOUR FOR VOATIONS AT 4 P.M.
EASTER HYMNS The Liturgical Committee invites parishioners to select their favorite hymns for the Easter season from the list below. It is the three most sacred days of the Church Year. The three days are one celebration beginning on Holy Thursday night, continuing on Good Friday, and ending with the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night. With very meaningful symbols and prayers the mystery of our redemption is celebrated. Each day focuses on a special part of the redemption: on Holy Thursday the gift of the Eucharist is celebrated; on Good Friday the cross is central to the celebration; on Holy Saturday night the Easter fire, the blessing of Easter water, and the renewal of baptismal promises and baptisms are part of this Alleluia event. We will be praying the official prayer of the church during these sacred days. The Liturgy of the Hours is prayed by all ordained priests and transitional deacons. Monasteries of monks and nuns also participate in this prayer of the Church. The praying of the psalms and the reading of Scripture make up this prayer of the Church for the world. The Church requires that we observe fast and abstinence on Good Friday. Parishioners are encouraged to voluntarily continue this penance until the Easter Vigil. It is called the paschal fast and is a way to prepare for the celebration of Easter.
THE SCHEDULE OF THE SACRED TRIDUUM HOLY THURSDAY, APRIL 12 No Mass at 9 a.m. Mass of the Last Supper at 7 p.m. Holy Communion will be given under both kinds. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held in the church until 10 p.m. Night Prayer at 10 p.m. GOOD FRIDAY, April 13 Morning Prayer at 9 a.m. in the church Ecumenical Way of the Cross begins in St. John the Baptist Church at noon. Passion and Death of the Lord Celebration at 7 p.m. Parishioners are invited to remove their shoes during the veneration of the Cross. HOLY SATURDAY, APRIL 14 Morning Prayer at 9 a.m. in the church Easter Vigil at 7 p.m.
ECUMENICAL WAY OF THE CROSS will be held on Good Friday. It begins at St. John the Baptist Church at noon. A cross is carried to the places in our city that are signs of where the Risen Lord continues to suffer through his people. At the synagogue all the people who will walk this way of the Cross will pray for the ending of anti-Semitism. At the Kennedy-Donavan School the handicapped people will be remembered. At Monte Park we will pray for the end of drug and alcohol abuse. At the old St. Mary’s School we will pray for those who have no home or shelter. At the Interfaith Office we will pray that all Christians be one. All parishioners are invited to make this way of the Cross with our brothers and sisters of St. John the Baptist Church, Our Lady of Assumption Church, St. James, Grace Episcopal Church, St. Martin’s Episcopal Church and other churches in the down-town area. FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT APRIL 1, 2001 PARISH MEETINGS
UNITED INTERFAITH ACTION UIA is a coalition of Catholic and Protestant Churches in New Bedford and Fall River that are trying to make the two cities, cities of hope. Through community organizing UIA has tried in the last four years to hear the concerns of the people of the two cities and address these concerns UIA continues to work on its agenda for youth. Members of UIA have been meeting with the mayor and School Committee members to get more funding for after school programming in our elementary schools. Presently all three junior high schools have after school programs. A very good number of the elementary schools in New Bedford have programs. There are still some schools that don’t have such programs. As we announced in past bulletins the Federal Government has given to the city a grant of one million and two hundred thousand dollars for three years to fund the after school programs. In addition to this funding, UIA is trying to get the School Committee to make a commitment of $500,000 toward the after school programming. All of this funding will assure that all the programs after school will be free of charge. On Monday, April 9 at 6 p.m. at the Hathaway School on Union St. there will be a meeting of the School Committee. At this meeting the petition for more money for the after school programs will be discussed. UIA is trying to get as many people as possible to attend this meeting so that the School Committee will understand that after school programming for our young people is a very important priority to keep them safe, to provide them with a place to go in those hours when it has been shown that young people get into the most difficulty; and to help them with their studies so that these young people will continue to stay in school. St. James committed ten people to go to this meeting to show support
for this concern. It is hoped that ten people from our
parish will be willing to go. Please go directly to the school. All
the UIA people will try to sit together. All of the UIA member
congregations of New Bedford and Fall River have committed two hundred
people to attend this meeting. |
