Through community organizing UIA has tried in the last four years to hear the concerns of the people of the two cities and address these concerns UIA continues to work on its agenda for youth. Members of UIA have been meeting with the mayor and School Committee members to get more funding for after school programming in our elementary schools. Presently all three junior high schools have after school programs. A very good number of the elementary schools in New Bedford have programs. There are still some schools that don’t have such programs. As we announced in past bulletins the Federal Government has given to the city a grant of one million and two hundred thousand dollars for three years to fund the after school programs. In addition to this funding, UIA is trying to get the School Committee to make a commitment of $500,000 toward the after school programming. All of this funding will assure that all the programs after school will be free of charge. On Monday, April 9 at 6 p.m. at the Hathaway School on Union St. there will be a meeting of the School Committee. At this meeting the petition for more money for the after school programs will be discussed. UIA is trying to get as many people as possible to attend this meeting so that the School Committee will understand that after school programming for our young people is a very important priority to keep them safe, to provide them with a place to go in those hours when it has been shown that young people get into the most difficulty; and to help them with their studies so that these young people will continue to stay in school. St. James committed ten people to go to this meeting to show support
for this concern. It is hoped that ten people from our parish will
be willing to go. Please go directly to the school. All the UIA people
will try to sit together. All of the UIA member congregations of New
Bedford and Fall River have committed two hundred people to attend this
meeting.
EASTER SUNDAY MORNING SUNRISE SERVICE The Parish Liturgical Committee would like to invite the parishioners to attend this Service that will be held at Fort Phoenix at 6 a.m. We will be leaving the church parking lot at 5:30 a.m. A small breakfast will be served in the rectory at St. James when we return. Every year the Interchurch Council of New Bedford sponsors this Service of celebrating the Resurrection of the Lord. With songs, prayers, and scripture readings Christians celebrate the Resurrection. In many ways St. James has been reaching out beyond its boundaries to join others in faith. The United Interfaith Action UIA has provided our parish with an opportunity to put our faith into action by responding to the needs of our cities of New Bedford and Fall River. During Lent many parishioners joined other Catholics from the greater New Bedford area in the Parish Mission that was held at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church on Mt. Pleasant Street. On Good Friday parishioners will have an opportunity to walk with Christians of other Faiths to the places where the Risen Christ still continues to live out his passion in the people who cry out for justice. Now on Easter Sunday we have another opportunity to join other Christians in proclaiming the Resurrection and singing together the Allelluia of the Easter Season.
VISIT ST. JAMES WEB SITE http://members.nbci.com/saintjames_nb St. James Vocations Committee will be sponsoring a "thirty day club of prayer" during the month of May.A calendar will be placed in the gathering area of the church on the last two weeks of April for parishioners to sign up for one of the thirty days of prayer for an increase of vocations to the priesthood and religious life. When a parishioner signs up for a day, he/she/they may pray in any way that they like for vocations. A family, more than one person, or one person may sign up for one day. Please write your name in one of the squares that indicates the date of the month of May. In that way we know that there is someone praying each day for vocations. The Vocations Committee is preparing a display of pictures of various vocations in the Church that will be part of the calendar. THE PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL invites parishioners to nominate parishioners to be new members of the Parish Pastoral Council. Boxes will be available at the entrances of the church during the last two weeks of April. The people that parishioners nominate will be contacted to see whether they are interested in having their names submitted to the Parish Council for a vote. The names that get the most votes will be elected to the Council. The person submitting the names does not have to identify him/herself. Just place the name of the parishioner in the box. The members that will remain on the Council are: Sue Foster, Al Lima, Sue Bedard, Lee Pacheco, Carol Sylvia, and Kathy Murphy. |
