LITURGY OF THE HOURS

OFFICIAL PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

During the Sacred Triduum we will have the hours of Morning Prayer on Good Friday and Holy Saturday and Night Prayer to conclude our adoration on Holy Thursday.

This prayer consists of the praying of the psalms and scripture readings. We join monasteries, convents, lay people and religious who pray the Liturgy of the Hours everyday all over the world. Priests and deacons are bound to the prayer everyday.

This prayer is offered for all the people of the world. Christ prays this prayer to the Father with and through His Church.

Parishioners are invited to join in this prayer with us.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL

For the last 62 years our Diocese has had the campaign called the Catholic Charities Appeal. It is a wonderful opportunity to support the many agencies that the Catholic Church of the Fall River Diocese has to help the poor and needy.

In the last nine years I personally have seen three of the agencies at work. On the church grounds we used to have the Catholic Social Services Office until last year. I personally saw the numbers of people that were helped. Just with the distribution of food over one hundred people were helped each week. Immigrants, people needing counseling; English as a second language classes are just a few of the many ways that people of our city regardless of religion or race were served.

The second concrete experience of the Appeal is the work done by the Catholic Chaplains at St. Luke’s Hospital. There is twenty–four hour coverage with sacraments and pastoral care being provided. I have helped with coverage and have seen the very wonderful care and service that is given to all Catholics in time of sickness.

The third is the Hispanic Ministry. With Fr. Oscar’s visits, I have had a glimpse of the work that the priests and sisters do with the Hispanic community in New Bedford. All Hispanic people are served whether they are documented or not. No one is left behind.

What would happen to all these people who are touched just by these three agencies, if it weren’t for the Catholic Charities Appeal?

The state is cutting back on its services to the poor. The Church will be receiving more requests and needs. It is an opportunity for us to help meet that challenge.
