CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL 2004 Parishioners of St. James will be receiving in the mail the material concerning the Catholic Charities Appeal. For those parishioners who do not get our mailing, please look for the same material in the gathering area of the church. Today is Divine Mercy Sunday. The compassion of the Risen Lord is shown very strongly through the agencies in our Diocese that are funded by the Appeal. The Catholic Pastoral Care of St. Luke’s Hospital is funded by the Appeal. The Catholic Chaplains: Fr. Mike Racine, Fr. Bill Rodriques, Sr. Roberta, Sr. Kate, and Sr. Hope receive their salaries from the Catholic Charities Appeal. There is always a Catholic Chaplain on duty twenty- four hours a day and seven days a week. The growing number of Hispanic people coming into our area presents to the Church many challenges. The Sisters of Our Lady of Guadalupe care for the daily needs of the Hispanic community in New Bedford, in Hyannis, in Nantucket, in Taunton and in Fall River. All of them are paid by the Appeal. Fr. Mark Fallon of he Holy Cross Fathers works especially with the people from Guatamala. He also is the new priest assigned to work with the Hispanic community in Fall River. He is paid by the Appeal. Anyone in the city of New Bedford who works with the poor is very familiar with Catholic Social Services which is located in the old Mt. Carmel Convent on Bonney Street.
