She will communicate your requests to the other members of the prayer line who will pray for your requests. SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK CELEBRATION SATURDAY, MAY 17 AT 4 P.M. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is given to those who are sick. Anyone who has a serious sickness is eligible for the Sacrament. Anyone who will undergo serious surgery can also receive the sacrament. Anyone who is weakened physically because of advanced age is also able to receive. People may be frightened about the possibility of receiving this sacrament because they are afraid of dying. The Sacrament for those who are dying is the Eucharist. It is called Viaticum. It means the food that is given to the person to accompany him/her on the final journey to eternity. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick can be received as many times as the person would like to receive it. It can be received for the same illness especially at its different stages. Those who would like to receive this Sacrament on May 17 are asked to call the rectory and give your name. A place will be reserved for you. The effects of the Sacrament of the Sick are many. The Church anoints the forehead and the hands of the person. The prayer of the Church is that the person be healed. The healing may be physical. It may be spiritual. In each case the Risen Christ comes to be the strength of the person in this weakened time. ADMISSIONS TO ST. LUKE’S HOSPITAL There has been a law passed by the federal government that tightens the confidentiality of every patient in hospitals. This law affects the procedure of admitting patients to the hospital. The person that is to be admitted is asked whether he/she would like to see a clergy person. This question applies to clergy in the hospital (chaplains) or to clergy from the church to which the person belongs. If the person says yes that they would like to see the clergy, the name of the person appears on the list of the hospital chaplain and on the list of the clergy from the churches in the greater New Bedford area who visit the hospital. If the person says no that they do not want to see clergy, the name of the person doesn’t appear on the two lists. It is important for parishioners to know that the answer to that question will determine whether the person is seen by the clergy of the area. This new policy has already gone into effect at St. Luke’s Hospital. We ask that parishioners communicate this information to family and friends so that parishioners will be continued to be visited on a regular basis. congratulations to the first communion class who receive first communion this Sunday the pictures of the class can be found in the gathering area |
