At Santo Christo Church in Fall River AT WHAT TIME? 7 P.M. HOW WILL WE GET THERE? Mt. Carmel and St. James will provide free bus transportation for those who want to attend. Who will be invited to come? The state Senators and Representatives of our area and the mayors of both cities will attend. What is the agenda of this Action? It is to ask the state legislators to keep the funding for Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English as a Second Language (ESL) at the present level and not to reduce it. It is to eliminate with the help of the mayors and state legislators the waiting list of 800 people who want to get into ESL classes by providing space in city facilities and getting more trained teachers. Why are the ESL classes so important? They provide many people with writing and reading skills in English so that they may get other jobs. It helps them to live more fully in our community. It also helps many people to communicate more effectively with their children. How will my going to this Action Meeting help? The more people that go to this Action the more voice we are giving to this cause. Those in authority will see that this is a priority for us in this area of the state. How long will the meeting last? One hour and a half of RENEWBishop O’Malley has ordered that each parish do "Renew" as a way of preparing for the centennial of the Diocese in 2004. Each parish is to form "a core community" which oversees the whole process. There are three groups that will be "shepherded" by the core community. The invitational committee will discuss ways of inviting people into the process of "Renew". This group will be the largest. The Liturgical Committee will plan Liturgies that will develop the themes of the two six week faith sharing groups that take place in the fall and in Lent. The Mission Committee plans a Parish Mission that will take place in September of 2002. The faith sharing groups are the core of "Renew". . |
