FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Yes, United Interfaith Action is still in existence. UIA has been meeting regulary to listen to the people’s concerns about their communities. It is from listening to the concerns that UIA establishes the agenda for response.

Our next meeting for UIA will be held at St. James Church Hall on Thursday, July 10 at 7 p.m. Please come and be with us.

The issues that people have raised are the concern for the high drop-out rate from our high schools; the violence in our city streets, and the need for more jobs.

English as a second language classes are being held to help people who have a difficulty with the English

language. This will help people get better jobs.

It will help them fill out job applications properly. It will help them communicate more effectively with their children.

There are some people of UIA who are on committees with other people of the city to study the problem of so many young people not graduating from high school.

More work has to be done to keep our streets more safe. Work with our Police Chief will begin by members of UIA.

These meetings are preparing for our ACTION meeting in October. It is at this meeting that we call upon parishioners of all the congregations to come out in great numbers to emphasize to our city and state officials that these issues are the concern of everyone. Large numbers at this Action will show our power to communicate our concern.

The Catholic Parishes in New Bedford who are participating in UIA are: Mt. Carmel, St. James, St. Lawrence, Immaculate Conception, and Our Lady of Assumption.

We join other Protestant parishes in the city to work for the good of our communities.
