coming together

st. James Parish

St. anne parish

Nuestra seÑora de Guadalupe parish

St. hedwig parish

LAST WEEKEND: Thanks to all who made last weekend’s celebration of the coming together of the parishioners of St. James and St. Anne’s parishes under one roof so beautiful. We thank the choir & musicians from both parishes for the beautiful music. We thank the people in the pews for singing out so strongly that a few people told me they felt “like it was Christmas.” Thanks to all who worked to make the church beautiful for Saturday’s ceremony and for all who helped put together the reception after Mass. We thank Father Buote and Deacon Morency for their presence with us and for bringing over such beautiful vestments.

We had hoped to have St. Anne’s altar here by this weekend, but by the time the bulletin was prepared that did not appear likely, due to problems with the moving and rigging companies. We do hope to have it here soon. We also hoped to have the statue of St. Anne here. Again, the job of moving it turned out to be more complicated than expected. Until it arrives, we have with us the statue of St. Anne from St. Hedwig’s Church.

The second stage will be the merging of St. Hedwig & Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe parishes with ours. That will occur on Saturday, July 24 at the 4 p.m. Mass. The readings of the Mass will be the special ones of St. James’ feast. The Hospitality Committee will also organize the reception after this Mass. If you would like to help at either reception, please contact Carol Sylvia (see below).

VOTE THIS WEEKEND:  Recently the Joint Committee working on the merger met and it was decided that a vote should be held regarding the name of the parish.

The joint committee unanimously felt that a vote should be conducted of the registered parishioners of the 4 parishes who are 18 or older. So as to have the vote in time to have a name before the merger day, it was decided that people could vote before or after Mass on the weekend of July 3 & 4. Voting stations for people registered at St. James or St. Anne’s will be at the door of the church here (parishioners of St. Hedwig/Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe will be voting there).

The joint committee decided that these should be the choices on the ballot:

“Our Lady of Guadalupe parish at St. James Church,” (with St. Anne’s Chapel & the hall “St. Hedwig’s Hospitality Center”)

OR

“Our Lady, Queen of All America” (which is the title the Pope gave Mary in his recent document, Ecclesia in America). (Although not mentioned on the ballot, the church building will still be called St. James Church).

You are free to write down a third option, should you be inspired in that manner

Please pray for guidance from the Holy Spirit during these next few weeks before voting.

Regardless of the name, St. James will continue to be honored here, with his statues on the lawn and on the baptismal font, in the painting in the vestibule of the chapel, and in the stained glass window over the organ (as well as in the windows of the Agony in the Garden, the Ascension, Pentecost and the Assumption).

Father Wilson was in Rome this week (Monday-Thursday), to be with Bishop Sean (for whom he was the secretary) to witness the Holy Father’s conferral of the pallium on him. Father prayed for our parish while there at the tombs of the saints.

Please feel free to contact the representatives from Saint James on the joint committee to express your opinions, concerns, hopes, etc.:

COMPLAINT/COMMENTS RE: MASS SCHEDULE, Etc: Please feel free to contact me (Fr. Richard) or any members of the joint committee or the parish pastoral or finance councils regarding the Mass schedule. We do not want to be constantly changing it, but we would like to hear whether it is okay as is or you think some changes should be made. I also received a call complaining about how Communion under Both Species was administered at the 8:30 Mass last weekend, particularly that Communion was not offered at the halfway point. Please offer your opinions pro & con.

SEMINARIAN COMING THIS SUMMER – Karl Bissinger, a seminarian of our diocese who is studying in Rome, will be working here this summer. He will be ordained a deacon at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Fall River on Saturday, July 17 at 11 a.m. and will serve here until September. I spoke with Fr. Correia about him and he said that he is a wonderful young man. Fr. Correia knew him when he was stationed in Assonet and saw him again most recently in Rome in April.

FR. CORREIA’S NEW ASSIGNMENT- Father Correia began on July 1 his new assignment as pastor of St. Michael’s parish in Swansea. The address is 270 Ocean Grove Avenue, Swansea, MA 02777 (phone: 508-673-2808).

SPANISH CLASS: Carol Oliveira, a parishioner of St. James and recently retired teacher, is offering a class in Spanish language, prayers & culture, on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in the parish hall. For more info, contact Carol at 508-997-8859.

YOUTH GROUP: The joint youth group of our combined parishes announces its upcoming activities: Thursday, July 15 – meeting @ 7:30 at St. Hedwig/Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.  Wednesday, July 21 – Outing to Water Country, New Hampshire. Monday, July 26 – Outing to PawSox midday game. For more info, contact Fr. Wilson.

EDUCATION COMMITTEE: will meet on Wednesday, July 7 at 7 p.m. in the rectory to discuss what we need in terms of adult education. Old members are welcome and new ones are, too, especially people from the 3 merging parishes.

LITURGICAL COMMITTEE: will meet on Monday, July 12 at 7:30 in the rectory to plan for upcoming liturgical events, such as the Feast of St. James, the Feast of St. Anne, the pastor installation Mass, etc. Old members are welcome and new ones are, too, especially people from the 3 merging parishes.

ALTAR SERVERS: We will be traveling to WaterWizz in Wareham on Wednesday, July 7. The trip is free for servers & their parents. Additional siblings can go for $25 each. Permission slips will be required (check the door of the church or the rectory). We will leave St. Hedwig/NS de Guadalupe at 9, leave St. James at 9:30 and return home c. 5 pm.

VISIT OUR NEIGHBORS BEFORE THEIR CHURCHES CLOSE:   At St. Hedwig/Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe the schedule is: Saturday 4 p.m. (English); Sunday 9:30 (English) & 11 a.m. (Spanish); Monday & Thursday 7 p.m. (Spanish); Tuesday & Friday 9 a.m. (English).

Eucharistic Adoration This Tuesday – From 7 to 9 p.m. we will have Eucharistic Adoration, with the Rosary prayed at 7:20, a talk by the priest at 8 p.m., Night Prayer & Benediction at 8:45 and Confessions available during the evening. All are welcome.

RENEW – The parish core committee will meet at 7 p.m. in the rectory on Monday, July 19.

SECOND COLLECTION: We or the envelope company made a mistake regarding the number of envelopes to send for the first weekend in August, assigning three envelopes for that weekend. We will only have 2 collections that day, one for the parish and one for the Holy Father. Please turn in the third envelope, for parish maintenance, the following weekend. Sorry for the confusion.

FATHER OSCAR Alvarez Zea will be visiting with us next weekend. Father Oscar is a priest of the Archdiocese of Medellín, Colombia who is studying Canon Law in Rome. He is friend of Fathers Correia and Wilson and often visits New Bedford while on vacation.

CENTENNIAL OF THE DIOCESE OF FALL RIVER

HISTORY BOOK OF THE DIOCESE

“Bearing Fruit by Streams of Waters,” the newly published history of the Diocese of Fall River, is on sale in the rectory for $20. This limited addition book begins with the work of the church in our area before the 1904 founding of the diocese and traces the various developments over the past century. St. James is featured as is the history of the ministry of the church in our neighborhood. Please speak to Fr. Wilson, Deacon Larry (after Masses) or Carol Sylvia (afternoons @ the rectory) about buying a copy. It might make a good gift or a keepsake to hand on to later generations.
