UNITER INTERFAITH ACTION UIA is a coalition of Protestant and Catholic congregations in the cities of New Bedford and Fall River. ( The congregations in New Bedford are: St. James, Our Lady of Assumption, Mt. Carmel, St. Lawrence, Immaculate Conception, Primitive United Methodist Church, and Grace Episcopal Church.) The coalition is organized to follow community organizing principles. Two full time community organizers help UIA. They are Ray Gagne and Fernanda De Souza. It is their role to help the members of UIA to hear what the concerns are in the community from the grass roots people in the two cities. Through house meetings and one on one contacts the concerns of people are put in order of importance (the concerns that people speak more about). Work is done on these concerns by contacting city and state officials. A plan is then presented to address the problems. Our next meeting for UIA will be held at St. James Church Hall on Thursday, July 10 at 7 p.m. Please come and be with us. The topics that will be discussed will be the growing problem of crime and violence in our neighborhoods; the addressing of the problem of a large drop-out rate at our high school; the need for job training by providing classes in English; and the concerns of the growing Brazilian and Hispanic communities in our two cities. Parishioners are invited to attend to speak about any of these issues as they affect them and their neighborhoods. These meetings are held in preparation for an ACTION meeting in the fall.
