RENEW* RENEW*

Hopefully this word is familiar to you.

It is a process to renew parishes that Bishop O’Malley has mandated for all parishes. It is preparing all the parishes to celebrate the centennial of the Diocese in 2004.

There are many facets to this process of Renew. The centerpiece of Renew are the faith sharing groups that meet once a week for six weeks beginning in October and in Lent. There are booklets that present certain themes that come from the Catechism of the Catholic Church and from Scripture. Once in a group, no one has to participate but just to listen, if one wishes.

During these six week periods, the parish weekend Masses will have certain special touches.

Pamphlets will also be available for those parishioners who cannot participate in a group. These will include a short meditation for each day.

The special Day of Prayer that is scheduled for September 15 in the Church Hall will be the kick-off for this program in our parish. There will sign up opportunities in September to register for this day and for the discussion groups.

FR.OSCAR will be returning to St. James for the month of August. He will be working in the Spanish parishes in the Diocese and learning more English.

Fr. Oscar is studying in Rome for his degree in Canon Law. He is originally from Columbia and will be returning there after he completes his studies.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

At our last Parish Pastoral Council meeting, I asked the members for an update of what their thoughts and feelings were about the crisis that we are going through in the Church.

They told me that they felt that the topic had been adequately presented in the homilies. They also felt that the meeting that we had with Arlene McNamee immediately after the removal of Fr. Frank was most helpful to give people the opportunity to express their feelings and get answers to their questions. The Prayer Service that we had during Holy Week to pray for Fr. Frank and the victims was also helpful.

I asked them what more should be done. They suggested that an invitation to parishioners who still feel that they need to discuss this issue or ask questions should be given.

I take this opportunity to extend to all parishioners an invitation to speak to me personally about any part of this issue that needs clarification or to just have another opportunity to express what they feel. If there is a good number of people who respond, we might invite a professional person to lead a group for the times that are needed.

I will wait to see what your response will be to this invitation. As the Parish Pastoral Council advised me: if there is no response, we will understand that to mean that there is no need for more sharing at this time.

Of course we still need to pray for the victims, their families, and those accused. Of course, there can never be enough that we can do to assure that this never happens again.

We will be a new Church. May God give us the help to respond to this challenge.
