FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

IMPLEMENTING THE CHANGES

Our parish has implemented some of the changes in the celebration of Mass that are prescribed in the new General Instruction that was published by the Vatican.

The next change that we would like to introduce is the manner of receiving Holy Communion. The General Instruction give these norms as a way of fostering deeper reverence for the Eucharist. The General Instruction gives to the Bishops’ Conferences of each country the right to establish specific guidelines for this part of the Mass.

The slight bowing of the head is the recommended gesture before extending one’s hand or opening one’s mouth for the reception of Holy Communion. (Genuflections before receiving is not the norm that the Bishops’ Conference of our country has established.)

It is important that this gesture of slightly bowing one’s head be done before extending the hand to receive Communion. Otherwise, the danger of the sacred Host falling from one’s hand could take place.

This gesture of bowing the head will slow the flow of the line receiving Communion. The Eucharistic Ministers need to be aware that people will be doing this before approaching the reception of Communion. Eucharistic Ministers need to be aware that not all people will do this because it takes time for people to be aware of this new act of reverence.

These acts of reverence are done by each person in union with the worshipping community. This is not an act of personal devotion. It is an act of a person who belongs to this community of worshippers.

The Church teaches this in the General Instruction. We are striving by these actions to help one another worship more effectively.
