Nuestra seÑora de Guadalupe parish

St. hedwig parish

As was reported last week in the bulletin, that week’s bulletin was prepared before the vote on the name of the parish was counted at the meeting of the Joint Committee, which was held on Tuesday, July 6 in the rectory. The bulletin was actually written before the vote was taken, which is why the numbers could not be reported in it. I am mentioning this now due to the concerns of a parishioner voiced to me after last Saturday’s Mass and due to questions from the Standard Times newspaper.

At the July 6 joint committee meeting each vote was read before the entire committee, while two people kept running totals, which came out to the same numbers. Here are the totals:

122              Our Lady of Guadalupe parish at St. James Church, with St. Anne’s Chapel & St. Hedwig’s Hospitality Hall

73     St. James

67     All Saints

54     Our Lady, Queen of All America

15     Our Lady of Mercy

8         All Saints of St. James

5         Our Lady of St. James

3         Our Lady of Saints

3         Our Lady of Hope

2         Mother of Our Savior

2         Holy Trinity

2    Our Lady of Grace

1         Blessed Union of Holy Ladies

1         Queen of Nations

1         St. James/Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe

1         Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe

1         St. James United

1         Mother Teresa

1         blank

5    invalid (checked off 2 choices)

The second stage of the merger will be the merging of St. Hedwig & Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe parishes with St. James & St. Anne next Saturday, July 24 at the 4 p.m. Mass. The readings of the Mass will be the special ones of St. James’ feast.

For that Saturday only, the Mass will have some Spanish in it, along with a Polish and a French hymn. Beginning on July 25, all the English Masses will continue as is, but there will also be an 11:30 a.m. Spanish Mass on Sunday and a 7 p.m. Spanish Mass on Mondays & Thursdays. We are in need of children to volunteer to present flowers to St. James and to St. Anne after Communion. Please contact the rectory.

As the St. Anne’s parishioners came together with Fr. Buote & the Blessed Sacrament from Brock Ave., the St. Hedwig & Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe parishioners will come to St. James from Division St. Since the distance is shorter, it was thought that they could come in procession, praying the rosary & singing. They will meet at St. Hedwig/NS de Gaudalupe at 3:15. All are welcome.

The Hospitality Committee will also organize the reception after this Mass. For more information, please contact Carol Sylvia (995-2917 or 992-9408 (afternoons)). I need to clarify that the reception will be a potluck one of “finger food” (since I had to write the bulletin a week & a half early, the specifications were up in the air). In other words, something a little more substantial than crackers, but not a full supper. Please join us downstairs after Mass and share each other’s culinary talents and meet some new friends. Please bring what you can so as to share with one another.

We thank the members of the joint committee from all 4 parishes for their dedication, their prayers, and their efforts to work as a team.

FINANCE COUNCIL: The finance council will also need to be formally reconstituted due to the merger, but I would like to meet with the members on Monday, August 9 at 7:45 p.m.

PARISH COUNCIL: The parish council will need to be reconstituted due to the merger, but I would like to meet with the members of the parish councils of St. James, St. Hedwig and Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe on Wednesday, August 11 at 7 p.m. Since all the parishioners of St. Anne’s were considered members of the council, I would like interested people from there to contact me (Fr. Wilson) beforehand. Thanks!

OUR SEMINARIAN, Karl Bissinger, was ordained a transitional deacon at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Fall River today (Saturday). He arrived here on Monday night and immediately had 3 meetings and a wake. This Sunday he is preaching at his home parish, but on Monday he’ll have his first Baptism here and he’ll lead the Adoration on Tuesday night.

SPANISH CLASS: Carol Oliveira, is offering a class Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in the rectory. For more info, contact Carol at 508-997-8859.

PARISH FESTIVAL, AUGUST 6,7,8 2004

-         Please sign-up at the doors of the church to help at the festival. Sheets may be found at the doors of the church to help with the games, the bake sale and yard sale aspects of the festival. If you’ve never helped before, here is a chance to make some new friends while having fun and raising money for our church.

-         Meeting for all who’ll help at the festival: Monday, July 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the parish hall.

-         More donations of gifts are needed (new, unbroken items; gift certificates) for the Chinese auction (bigger items) and the twistee booth (smaller items). Please bring them to Carol at the rectory. Thanks!

-         We will also have a “yard sale” area at the festival. We would like good new/used things to sell here, but not clothing, shoes, books or electrical items. Please see what you have around your house and drop it off at the rectory.

-        If you would like more raffle tickets, please contact Carol at the rectory.
