IMPLEMENTING THE CHANGES

Our parish has implemented some of the changes in the celebration of Mass that are prescribed in the new General Instruction that was published in the Vatican.

The next change that we would like to introduce is the manner of receiving Holy Communion. The General Instruction gives these norms as a way of fostering deeper reverence for the Eucharist. The General Instruction gives to the Bishops’ Conferences of each country the right to establish specific guidelines for this part of the Mass.

The slight bowing of the head is the recommended gesture before extending one’s hand or opening one’s mouth for the reception of Holy Communion. (Genuflection before receiving is not the norm that the Bishops’ Conference of our country has established.)

It is important that this gesture of slightly bowing one’s head be done before extending the hand to receive Communion. Otherwise, the danger of the sacred Host falling from one’s hand could take place.

This gesture is an act of devotion is union with the worshipping community joined to celebrate Mass. It is a communal act.

We need to keep in mind the communal aspect of each person receiving Holy Communion. Our walking down the aisle together is a symbol of the Church on pilgrimage to the eternal banquet.
