IMPLEMENTING THE CHANGES

NORMS FOR RECEIVING COMMUNION

The slight bowing of the head is the recommended gesture before extending one’s hand or opening one’s mouth for the reception of Holy Communion. (Genuflection before receiving is not the norm that the Bishops’ Conference of our country has established.) It is important that this gesture of slightly bowing one’s head be done before extending the hand to receive Communion. Otherwise, the danger of the sacred Host falling from one’s hand could take place.

This gesture is an act of devotion is union with the worshipping community joined to celebrate Mass. It is a communal act. We need to keep in mind the communal aspect of each person receiving.

FEAST OF ST. JAMES, JULY 25, 2003

As we celebrated the feast of our patron on Friday, and as we have celebrated the ordination and installation of Bishop George Coleman on Tuesday of last week, it is a good time to look at our parish once again.

Our parish is a part of a larger community that is called the local Church of Fall River. We mention the name of our bishop at every Mass because it is in union with him and Pope John Paul II that we are Catholic.

As a new chapter begins for our Diocese, we need to see our parish in the context of this new beginning. St. James was founded 115 years ago to serve the Irish and English Catholics of the south end.

We see now that our parish is made up of many ethnic groups. We all speak English, but the cultures and languages that are our foundation are many.

We notice that in our country the group of Catholics that are increasing is the Hispanic community. In our Diocese we see the Hispanic and Brazilian communities becoming larger.

This increase will affect who we are as a local Church. We see and hear many people speaking in Spanish. We are called to welcome them into our country and into the local Church of Fall River.

Fr. Richard Wilson, who is the secretary to the Bishop and Director of the Hispanic ministry in our Diocese, asked to use St. James Church for the Vigil of Pentecost. Of course, I invited them. It was wonderful to see these devout people praying and singing in Spanish in our parish church of St. James.

From our church they processed through the streets with the Blessed Sacrament to their church on Division St.

The universal Church in the person of Pope John Paul II has responded to this new surge of many Hispanic Catholics in the United States. When he visited Mexico, he called for the two continents of North and South America to be called just America.

He named Our Lady of Guadalupe to be the patroness of the Americas. By a decision of our Bishops’ Conference and the approval of the Vatican, this day of Our Lady of Guadalupe has been raised to the status of a Feast in our country.

The Feast of our patron, St. James, has Hispanic connections. The body of St. James is buried in Spain. A large Shrine has been erected there since 800 A.D. We notice in our side entrance of our church that the painting of St. James has him dressed in Spanish clothing. We notice in the background of the painting the Shrine of St. James (S. Tiago de Campostella) in Spain.
