PARISH FINANCIAL COUNCIL REPORTS

As our parish continues to get smaller, it is and was important to consider ways of reducing our expenses. One of the ways was to consider the sale of the old convent which we used for our Religious Education classes.

Our Religious Education classes are getting smaller every year, as well. Eight years ago we had 250 children registered from grades one though nine. This past school year we had one hundred and fifty children registered. We would average about thirty five children in our First Communion and Confirmation classes. This year we had sixteen children receive First Holy Communion and twenty five candidates receive Confirmation.

We only used the building (old convent) for no more than five hours a week. The Parish Financial Council understood that the building needed many repairs and that it was financially impossible to repair the building for the few hours that we used it.

It was decided that we sell the building to the Diocese. In December of 2000 that building was sold to the Diocese. Catholic Social Services who rented the first floor of the building found that the building was too small for their work. They moved to Mt. Carmel Convent on Bonney St.

Catholic Social Services decided to use the building for single mothers who need training to maintain a home, to cook, to budget their money, etc. These mothers stay in the house for two years only.

The building is called the Donavan House named in honor of one of the nuns who were killed in El Salvador.

The Diocese has in the contract the understanding that if this program doesn’t continue, the building will be returned to the Diocese.

With the selling of the building also comes the reduction of our property insurance bill. We have paid $16,000 each year for the insurance of the three buildings (Church, rectory, and convent). With the sale of the convent, we will see a reduction in this bill.

The Diocese completed the sale last week by sending St. James a check for $100,000.

This money will be placed in the Diocesan Bank to replenish the money that we used in repairing the church over the last few years.

The Parish Financial Council ordered Fr. Ed to convey to the Parish Pastoral Council the need to hire a parish secretary.

The Parish Pastoral Council agreed.

For the first time we reported in our last Financial Report that the last fiscal year was completed in the black. The amount of money that put us in the black was the salary of a secretary.

Other ways need to studied to keep cutting back on expenses so that we can financially make it as we continue as a parish.

Even in the area of the financial our Mission Statement is applicable: St. James is Hopeful.
