FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK IMPLEMENTING THE CHANGES NORMS FOR RECEIVING COMMUNION The slight bowing of the head is the recommended gesture before extending one’s hand or opening one’s mouth for the reception of Holy Communion. (Genuflection before receiving is not the norm that the Bishops’ Conference of our country has established.) It is important that this gesture of slightly bowing one’s head be done before extending the hand to receive Communion. Otherwise, the danger of the sacred Host falling from one’s hand could take place. This gesture is an act of devotion is union with the worshipping community joined to celebrate Mass. It is a communal act. We need to keep in mind the communal aspect of each person receiving.
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK As we continue to celebrate the Ordination and Installation of our new Bishop George Coleman and as we prepare for our centennial anniversary of our Diocese in 2004, we again have an opportunity to see how we as a parish can reach out to the larger community. In the city of New Bedford we welcome new groups of people from South and Central America. We welcome the Brazilian people from South America. (The Church is very strong in her teaching about accepting people of different languages and cultures.) They are part of our Catholic Church. The Catholic Charities Appeal funds many ministries that help these groups. Fr. Ramon and the Sisters of Our Lady of Guadalupe; and Fr. Jose Giunta of St. Kilian Church serve the Hispanic community in our city. A Brazilian priest lives in Fall River to serve the Brazilian community there. One of the services that is being provided is ESL Classes (English as a second language). This helps people to know the language so that they can get better jobs. It also helps in dealing with their children who quickly learn the language. Emergencies at the hospital can become very difficult when people do not understand what the doctor is saying. Another concern is violence in our cities. The Mayan community came to our UIA meeting and spoke about their houses being robbed when they were at work. They spoke about people being harmed in the streets. A large meeting was held in St. Anthony Church Hall on Acushnet Ave. to speak about this violence. United Interfaith Action (UIA) is a coalition of twenty churches (Protestant and Catholic) in Fall River and New Bedford that is trying to address these two issues of getting better jobs for people in our cities and violence in our cities. I encourage you to support and help in the work of UIA. UIA is a wonderful way of reaching out to our community to help our brothers and sisters. St. James has been a part of UIA since the its beginning. The first Action meeting was held at St. James with 800 people attending. St. James has successfully attended the other Action meetings in the following years. An Action meeting is being planned for October to be held at Mt. Carmel School Auditorium on Rivet Street. I hope that many will attend. The inner acceptance of people who speak a different language, dress differently, and have a different culture is the most important way of welcoming these new people into our communities. |
