RENEW Bishop Sean O’Malley has mandated that all the parishes in the Diocese begin a spiritual program called, " Renew". This process of "Renew" will be the preparation of the Diocese’s Centennial Celebration in 2004. The word, renew, means to make new again. That is the purpose of this movement called "Renew". It is supposed to make the faith of each Catholic, the life of each parish, and the mission of each diocese new again. People and parishes all over the world who have experienced "Renew" say, "It has made my faith more alive." "I understand my Catholic Faith more deeply." "Our parish is really alive now." The nuts and bolts of "Renew" are easy to understand. Firstly, "Renew" is not a year long involvement. "Renew" is six weeks beginning in October and six weeks in Lent for the next three years. It is only once a week in these blocks of time. In these six week periods there are faith sharing groups that meet once a week There are topics that are presented in small booklets. These topics are taken from the Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church. These sessions are for people to learn more about their Faith. They are not self - help groups. They are groups of people who tell what the Catholic Faith means to them. If someone doesn’t want to share, that is fine. They are still learning. Their presence helps the others in the group. Catholics need opportunities to talk about their Faith to others. Catholics seem to be very private with their Faith. Sharing makes our Faith grow in our lives and in the lives of others. "Renew" begins with a Mission in the Parish. Our Renew Core Community has decided that it will be one afternoon on Sunday, September 15 in the church hall. There were fifty people who participated in a Day of Prayer last year at the Family Life Center. This Mission Day is similar. Talks will be given; a Mass will be celebrated in the Church; there will be a meal. It is a very low- key day. It should be a very good experience. The Masses on the weekends of the six weeks in the fall and in Lent will be celebrated in special ways. The Renew Core Community Committee has decided that a homily will be included in the bulletin during these periods. The homily will develop the topic that is the subject of the Faith sharing groups for that week. The Renew Core Community decided that it would be a good idea to have a special section on our parish web site dedicated to "Renew." St. James is once again Hopeful in "Renew". |
