FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

IMPLEMENTING THE CHANGES

NORMS FOR RECEIVING COMMUNION

The slight bowing of the head is the recommended gesture before extending one’s hand or opening one’s mouth for the reception of Holy Communion. (Genuflection before receiving is not the norm that the Bishops’ Conference of our country has established.) It is important that this gesture of slightly bowing one’s head be done before extending the hand to receive Communion. Otherwise, the danger of the sacred Host falling from one’s hand could take place.

This gesture is an act of devotion is union with the worshipping community joined to celebrate Mass. It is a communal act. We need to keep in mind the communal aspect of each person receiving.

RENEW

The Diocese of Fall River will be celebrating its one hundredth anniversary in 2004. To prepare for this celebration, many parishes have been going through a process called, "Renew". It is held for a period of six weeks. There is one theme for each period. The theme is developed at the Masses on the weekends. The theme is also used in the faith sharing groups that meet once a week during this period of six weeks.

The next session will begin on the first week of October. We will have a sign up campaign to get as many parishioners to join as possible. Although there have other sessions in the past, nevertheless parishioners are invited to come for the first time. Each period of six weeks presents a new topic.

We have seventy–five parishioners that have been participating in the program so far. Our goal is to get twenty-five more parishioners to make it one hundred parishioners participating in October!

The faith sharing groups are made up of people who can come at certain time. People can participate as they wish. If they wish just to listen, that is fine. People share their thoughts and feelings about the topic. There are no right or wrong answers. People grow from listening to one another. People get to know other parishioners on a deeper level.

The parish grows as well.

Please mark your calendars. Be with us for a wonderful experience of the Faith.

ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT AND HOLY HOUR FOR VOCATIONS TO THE PRIESTHOOD AND RELIGIOUS LIFE.

We have had this devotion on the first Sunday of the month. We discontinued for the summer because of the heat in the chapel and distractions from open windows.

We would like to start the devotion again in October.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament begins at noon and continues until 5 p.m.

At 4 p.m. we have a holy hour for vocations.

We have had up to thirty people attend our holy hour. We have had a good number of people spend time in adoration between noon and 1 p.m. The problem is that on some Sundays we have had no one in the chapel between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. We need parishioners to spend some time in the slot.

We have placed on the bulletin boards of the church (one at the side entrance and one at the main entrance) a list of times for adoration. We ask parishioners to write their names near the times that they can come. Hopefully all the time slots will be filled to have a successful day of praying for vocations.

Prayer is a very powerful way of having our Church blessed with new vocations.
