WELCOME To Fr. Richard Wilson who will be celebrating the 9:30 a.m. Mass next Sunday. Fr. Richard is well known to many of our parishioners. He was a transitional Deacon at St. John the Baptist Church in New Bedford. He was ordained a priest at St. John the Baptist Church in New Bedford. He celebrated his First Mass in Quincy, Ma. (His parents presently live in Quincy.) Fr. Wilson was ordained six years ago. He was assigned to Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville, Mass. (on Cape Cod). Presently he is secretary to the Bishop. DIOCESE OF FALL RIVER JUBILEE 2004 The centennial celebration of the Diocese begins with the first Sunday of Advent. On Sunday, November 23, the Feast of Christ the King and the day of awarding of the Marian Medals, an icon will be given to each parish to enthrone in a place of honor for this diocesan jubilee year. Parishioners of St. James are familiar with this celebration because we received a special Icon of the Holy Trinity for the Holy Year 2000. The Icon will be solemnly enthroned next to the Holy Trinity Icon on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception December 8 at 9 a.m. Mass. Icons are different than statues that we have in the western Church. We try to make our statues look like the person they are honoring. The Icon makes the figures almost distorted to bring out the dimension of eternity. "Icons are windows to heaven." The icon of the Diocesan Jubilee is depicting the Pentecost event. It presents Mary in the middle of the Apostles. (Mary is the patroness of our diocese under the title of St. Mary of the Assumption.) Above Mary and the Apostles is the dove that is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. (The theme of this centennial year is : The Spirit gives life.) There are holy cards available to all parishioners at the entrances of the church. Take as many as you like. Eucharistic ministers are asked to take a holy card for the shut-ins. On the front of the holy card is the picture of the Icon. On the back of the holy card is a prayer for this centennial year.
