DIOCESE OF FALL RIVER JUBILEE 2004

The centennial celebration of the Diocese begins with the first Sunday of Advent. On Sunday, November 23, the Feast of Christ the King an icon will be given to each parish to enthrone in a place of honor for this diocesan jubilee year.

Parishioners of St. James are familiar with this celebration because we received a special Icon of the Holy Trinity for the Holy Year 2000.

The Icon will be solemnly enthroned next to the Holy Trinity Icon on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception December 8 at 9 a.m. Mass.

The icon of the Diocesan Jubilee is depicting the Pentecost event. It presents Mary in the middle of the Apostles. (Mary is the patroness of our diocese under the title of St. Mary of the Assumption.) Above Mary and the Apostles is the dove that is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. (The theme of this centennial year is : The Spirit gives life.)

There are holy cards available to all parishioners at the entrances of the church. Take as many as you like. Eucharistic ministers are asked to take a holy card for the shutins.

On the front of the holy card is the picture of the Icon. On the back of the holy card is a prayer for this centennial year.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

On November 17, 2003 at Mt. Carmel School Auditorium 700 people gathered for the Action meeting. Loretta Bourque was in line with the representatives of the churches that were present.

What a wonderful feeling I had when she said that we had sixty parishioners from St. James at the Action. What a greater joy I had when later I was informed that there were really 80 parishioners from St. James!

The format is the always the same, but the agenda is different. Mayor Kalisz explained the purpose of these annual Actions very well. It is not a night of speeches. It is a dialogue in progress. We keep meeting each year to continue the work that needs to be done in our cities.

Superintendent Michael Longo showed this when he reported that he had fulfilled his commitment that he had made a year before.

The large number of people at each Action is a way of keeping the awareness that this is important to all of us. Large numbers say that.

New alliances with St. Anne’s Hospital, BCC and U Mass Dartmouth promise a wonderful new year of working together to put our Faith into action.
