27th Sunday of Ordinary Time

by Very Rev. Edward Correia

Where is God? What is happening to us? These were the words of the prophet of the first reading. These may also be our words as we continue to go through the tragedy in New York.

The first reading ends with the assurance that God will come to help us.

St. Paul tells us in the second reading that God has already come. God lives within us because of our baptism. He is always with us. He is especially with us now as we go through this crisis.

The Gospel tells us that our duty is to make God’s presence known to others in small little ways. The children of Kosovo know what it means to be bombed and have family members homes destroyed. They wanted to let the children of this country know that we will get through this. They drew pictures of the American flag. They drew people crying and sad. They wrote that they are praying for us and support us.

It was something very small. It was as small as the mustard seed of the Gospel. It had a great effect in helping us know that God is with us.

We need to do little things for one another to show that God is with us.

Jesus took bread and wine and said, "Take and eat. Take and drink. This is my body and blood". This small action has saved the world and has given us a powerful presence of God with us in the Eucharist.

God is with us. If today you hear his voice harden not your hearts.
