Sunday, December 23, 2001 4th Sunday of Advent
by Very Rev. Edward Correia
We are celebrating a baptism at this Mass. I will pour water over the child and invoke the name of the Trinity. This pouring of water is a sign of the love that God continuously pours into us. There may be obstacles as the story of the first Christmas presents but the obstacles were overcome and the wondrous birth of Christ took place. Zachary and Elizabeth were beyond child bearing years, but they miraculously had the birth of John the Baptist. Mary was single and a virgin, but Mary conceived through the power of the Holy Spirit. Joseph wanted to divorce Mary quietly, but an angel told Joseph in a dream to take her into his home. When there are obstacles in our own lives such as a problem or doubts about God or another impossible situation, somehow God works around it to reach us with his love. We need to have the openness of Mary and the trusting of Joseph. Then the wonders of the Christmas story will happen in our lives. |
