Pentecost Sunday

Welcome to all of you, we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost. The word "Pentecost" means fifty days. This is the fiftieth day after the Feast of Easter. On this day the apostles, disciples, and Mary were gathered in the upper room where the Last Supper took place. Suddenly there was a soft breeze. They apostles and the others looked to see that there was a flame of fire above each person’s head. They were receiving the Holy Spirit.

That is the reason we wear and use red today, because of the tongues of fire that were above each person’s head as they received the Holy Spirit.

Who is the Holy Spirit? Yes, the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Holy Trinity. We really don’t know the Holy Spirit.

We know what rain is. We certainly have been getting a lot of rainy days lately. Notice, though, how green everything is. The rain has brought out all the beautiful shades of green in the grass, bushes and trees.

The Holy Spirit is like a gentle rain that continuously falls upon us and creation. The Holy Spirit brings out the most in us as He did with the Apostles at Pentecost. After they received the Holy Spirit, they were no longer afraid. They went out and began to preach regardless of what would happen to them.

One day a group of first graders went into a church. The teacher was leading them in an imaginary trip. The children were screaming and laughing. The priest came into the church and explained that they should be quiet. Then he asked them why they should be quiet. One child responded that they had to be quiet because the people were sleeping in the church.

Yes, sometimes we can fall asleep in living out our faith. The Holy Spirit will wake us up, if we allow Him.
