There are so many questions that I heard from people about diabetes and there are so many speculations about it. Here, I’m giving you some of the myths to give you more understanding on what diabetes is all about.

Myth # 1:You can catch diabetes from someone else.
No, you cannot. Diabetes is not contagious. Even though there seems to be some genetic link in diabetes, maintaining a healthy lifestyle such as regular exercise and proper diet will help you to stay away from diabetes.

Myth # 2: People with diabetes can’t eat sweets or chocolate.
If eaten as part of a healthy diet and or combined with exercise, sweets and desserts may be eaten by people with diabetes. The key point is having a healthy diet. Always remember to control the amount of consumption.

Myth # 3: Eating too much sugar causes diabetes.
Not true. Diabetes is caused by a combination of genetic and lifestyle factors. You can improve your health by making lifestyle changes. Being over weight is identified as an important factor that contributes in developing diabetes in later age.

Myth # 4: People with diabetes should eat special diabetic food.
A healthy diet for people with diabetes is the same as that for everyone. Choose to have food that is low in fat (especially saturated fat and trans fats), moderate in salt and sugar, with meals based on whole grain foods, vegetables and fruit. You are what you eat, enjoy your life!

Myth # 5: You should only eat small amounts of starchy foods if you have diabetes.
Starchy foods are part of a healthy diet, particularly when eaten in combination with compatible foods. Go ahead, there is nothing wrong with it.
