Wednesday of Week 14 - Year I

Today we move to the next generation, the story of Joseph and his jealous brothers. The lectionary unfortunately gives only glimpses, an edited version of the real story which demonstrates how God shows mercy and protection even when we refuse to avail ourselves of those golden opportunities, those missed bethels; even when the human heart is darkened by evil and fear.

The story of Joseph somewhat images the story of Jesus. Joseph was one of twelve and the favored one. Jesus selected twelve, but had his favorites. Joseph was sold as a slave for 20 pieces of silver. Jesus was sold to die for 30 pieces.

In Egypt Joseph experienced difficulties and challenges from those who felt intimidated by his special relationship with God. In the end however, Joseph like his father is reconciled with his brothers and all the animosity is put in the past. Joseph could not bring himself to abandon his brothers no matter how much pain they had caused him.

Likewise Jesus could never abandon us, whom he recognizes as brothers and sisters in a situation much worse than that brought on by a famine. We may be starving spiritually and very near death. He has given us a spiritual food so that we may never need be hungry again. He has given us a spiritual drink that we may never need be thirsty again. He has given us his own body and blood.

Loving Creator let your eyes behold your hungry creatures. Feed us with hope in all our famines. Amen.
